Add Image Gallery

Instructors can use a Lightbox Gallery to build an image resource. A Lightbox Gallery is a group of pictures that acts as a slide show when activated by students. The main configuration option involves telling CourseSpaces which directory of images you wish to use. Small thumbnails are generated through the Lightbox, which students use to view the image gallery.

Image Basics

If you are using digital images or images you have scanned  onto your computer, it's likely that they will be very large.

  • For example, an image that is 837 pixels in width and 960 pixels in height (approx. 12 inches x 12 inches) will cause viewing problems on a computer screen because it's too large.

You should reduce the image size before importing the image into CourseSpaces. That will reduce the storage size at the same time. Another reason for resizing images is that if you're using several photos in the Lightbox Gallery, you will achieve a much greater sense of balance and therefore effectiveness if all your images are the same size.

Creating the LightBox Gallery

  1. Click on Add an activity or resource on your course page.
  2. Select Lightbox Gallery under Resources.
  3. Fill in a Name (what students will see to access the gallery) and a Description.
  4. There are a variety of settings to choose from. You can probably leave most of these at the default, depending on your needs.
  5. Select Save and Display.
  6. On the next page,  select Add images. The screen will change where you can now drag and drop only 1 image. Alternatively, you can click Choose a file... and either Upload a file from your computer, or search within the various Repositories.
  7. Now select the Add images button. This will show you the image gallery, with the image you just uploaded.
  8. If you have another image, select Add images, and repeat the process again.
  9. Repeat the process until all of the images have been added.

Adding Multiple Files at Once

You can only add one image at a time to a Lightbox Gallery, unless you have "zipped" an image folder.  At the top of the page, you will see the following message:  "If you wish to upload multiple files at a time, you can submit a zip file with images inside it and all valid images inside the zip archive will be added to the gallery." To add your zip file, drag and drop the folder or browse for the folder to add.  Click on Add images and all of the images in the folder will appear.
