Quiz: Open Too Long

Example: I set the time for my quiz to 45 minutes but the results for one of my students shows the quiz was open for 2.5 hours. I wonder how this happened?

There are a variety of scenarios for this, depending on how you have set up the quiz. All are either difficult to fix, or they are not fixable.

Scenario #1 illustrates the usual sequence of events

  • in this example the quiz has a 10 minute time limit and closes at 2PM
  • Student starts quiz at 1:30PM, finishes at 1:35PM, and submits the quiz at 1:36PM
  • Viewing the quiz attempt will show 1:30PM as start time, and 1:36PM as closing time (along with the times the student saved the individual questions, if set)

Scenario #2: quiz end time appears later than the time allowed for the quiz

  • Student starts quiz at 1:30PM and is still working on it at 1:39:59PM
  • At 1:40PM, CourseSpaces automatically submits the quiz
  • Viewing the quiz attempt will show 1:30PM as start time, and 1:40:01PM as the closing time (along with the times the student saved the individual questions, if set)

Scenario #3: quiz end time appears later than the time allowed for the quiz

  • Student starts quiz at 1:30PM, works on it until 1:35PM, and closes browser or loses internet connection
  • At 1:45PM, the student returns to quiz page and sees a button, Continue attempt
  • At 1:46PM, the student clicks the button. The part of the quiz that the student last viewed will appear for a split second, and then CourseSpaces automatically submits the quiz
  • Viewing the quiz attempt will show 1:30PM as start time, and 1:46:01PM as the closing time (along with the times the student saved the individual questions, if set)

Scenario #4: the quiz shows no closing time (browser closed or connection lost)

  • Student starts quiz at 1:30PM, works on it until 1:35PM and closes browser or loses internet connection
  • At 2:01PM, the student goes back to the quiz page and sees a page saying Quiz closed
  • Viewing the quiz attempt will show 1:30PM as start time, and no closing time (along with the times the student saved the individual questions if set).

Scenario #5: the quiz shows no closing time (javascript is disabled)

  • Student's browser has javascript disabled, starts quiz at 1:30PM, works on it until 1:59:59PM
  • At 2:00PM, when the student attempts to submit, save, or go to the next page, a big red error message will appear saying You are not allowed to attempt this quiz at this time because: This quiz is not currently available.
  • Viewing the quiz attempt will show 1:30PM as start time, and no closing time (along with the times the student saved the individual questions).

Scenario #6: quiz not submitted automatically (javascript is disabled)

  • Student's browser has javascript disabled, starts quiz at 1:30PM, works on it until 1:45PM, and submits at 1:46PM
  • At 1:40PM, the quiz is not automatically submitted because the student's browser has javascript disabled
  • Viewing the quiz attempt will show 1:30PM as start time, and 1:46PM as closing time (along with the times the student saved the individual questions).
  • In this scenario, instructors would want to pay close attention to when the individual questions were submitted to see if they were changed or saved after the time limit.
