Posting to a Discussion Forum

How you post to a forum depends on the forum type that the instructor has designed. Below are generic instructions. If you find there are differences from what you see in your course, contact your instructor directly for specific instructions.

Click the Forum link from your course home page. A summary page appears listing any specific details your instructor may have provided as well as existing posts.

  1. Click the Add a new discussion topic button.
  2. Enter a brief topic of your discussion in the Subject field. This subject will appear in the list of discussion within the forum (make it short)
  3. Enter the message content in the Message text-box.
  4. Choose whether you would like to receive email notifications when other participants reply to your post using the Discussion subscription check-box.
  5. Click the Add button to add a file or drag the file from your local computer and drop it in the marked area (dashed rectangle). This option may not be available depending on how the instructor set up the forum.
  6. Click the Post to forum button to add your post to the forum. A confirmation screen will appear informing you that you have 45 minutes to edit your post. The post will be added to the forum. After the 45 minutes you are unable to edit your post.

Important

  • If you are composing a long forum post, it is better to compose it on your computer first in order to avoid UVic logging you out (without you knowing) and losing your work. You can then copy and paste it into the text box (Control or Command C for copy; Control or Command V to paste).
  • If your instructor has set up group forums they may have allowed you to have read-only access to other groups’ forums. If this is the case you will see a drop-down list labeled Visible Groups at the top, where you can select which group you would like to view.
