Overview/Settings

There are a variety of ways in which instructors may send notifications and/or messages. It is important that you know which modes of communication will be used within CourseSpaces, if any. (Instructors also have other, external messaging systems that they may use instead of CourseSpaces).

If there are any issues regarding sending, replying, or receiving messages, be aware that it is extremely difficult to track down what the problem is, as there are a multitude of variants at play.

Messaging Settings

There are two places to review your settings: Your Profile and Messaging. It is up to you to configure and make sure these settings are correct, as they are individual user based.

Your Profile:Profile Settings

Review the following profile settings and make changes where appropriate. From the My Home page click the Edit profile link in the Settings block. Whenever you change a setting, make sure you select the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom of the profile page.

  • Email Address: This is the preferred email address that is set via the main UVic website.
  • Email Display: Should be set to "Allow other course members to see email address." If you set to "Hide" - you may not receive messages/notifications as emails.
  • Email Digest Type: This setting is particularly important if you are using Forums in your course(s) since it determines how forum messages will be sent to you.
  • Forum Auto Subscribe: Specify whether CourseSpaces will automatically subscribe you to a forum after your initial post. If you subscribe, it means you will receive emails of forum posts. Be aware - this could mean a lot of emails!
  • Forum Tracking: Specify whether you want to keep track of new posts made in forums from the Forum tracking: drop-down menu. Selecting Yes: highlight new posts for me will highlight forum messages that you have not yet read so that you can quickly see what’s new.

Messaging:Messaging Settings

Located in the Settings side block. Messaging allows you to configure notification methods for incoming messages. It is VERY important that you review these settings.

Once you enter this area, there are many settings that you can configure including receiving messages/notifications as pop-ups or sent to email.

Note: The choices you have on this screen depends on your role and permissions within CourseSpaces. The "role" permissions cannot be changed.
